Before the calm waters of the Sacandaga Reservoir reflected the morning sun, this valley told a very different story.

In the early 1900s, the Hudson River was unpredictable, spring floods tore through towns, destroyed homes, and crippled industry downstream. In response, New York State undertook one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects of its time. By 1930, the Conklingville Dam was completed, giving rise to what we now know as the Great Sacandaga Lake.

But progress came at a cost.

Entire communities, farms, homes, and small towns, were relocated or lost beneath the rising waters. Families rebuilt. Roads were rerouted. Landmarks disappeared. What remained was something new: a reservoir that brought stability, protected the Hudson Valley, and reshaped the Adirondack foothills into a place of reflection, recreation, and renewal.

Today, the Sacandaga stands as a symbol of resilience, where sacrifice forged strength, and change created opportunity.
