MISSION RED-E: THE LEGACY REBORN
A Century of Being "Red-E"
In the history of the American soldier, coffee has always been more than a beverage - it was the "black drink of freedom." But for decades, it was a burden. Civil War soldiers had to grind beans with rifle butts and brew over open fires that signaled their position to the enemy.
Everything changed in 1917. As the American Expeditionary Forces headed into the trenches of World War I, they carried a secret weapon: “Washington’s Ready Coffee."
The Original "Mission Ready" Fuel
The Anglo-Belgian inventor George Constant Louis Washington (known simply as "George" to the troops) perfected the first mass-produced instant coffee. It was fast. It was light. It was smoke-free. It was "Ready Coffee.”
The U.S. War Department realized that speed was a tactical advantage. They requisitioned the entire national supply of George’s coffee - every single gram - to ensure that every soldier had a "Cup of George" in his kit. By the end of the war, the military was sourcing 37,000 pounds a day of this "Ready" powder to keep the mission moving.
Voices from the Trenches
These are the actual words of the men who relied on the original "Ready" coffee to survive the Great War:
"I am very happy despite the rats, the rain, the mud, the draughts, the roar of the cannon, and the scream of shells. It takes only a minute to light my little oil heater and make some George Washington Coffee. Every night I offer up a special petition to the health and well-being of Mr. Washington." — American Soldier, Letter from the Trenches, 1918
"The hot coffee with our reliable 'hardtack' biscuits hit the spot and revived exhausted, hungry, and drowsy soldiers... On occasions when the morning finds us on our feet [without water], I am glad to be able to chew on a spoonful of coffee." — E.S. Sáenz, U.S. Infantryman, France
The Mission Continues
When the war ended, the advertisements read: "Went to War! Home Again." The name “Ready” became synonymous with the grit of those who served.
We’ve reclaimed that name and made some minor changes. Mission Red-E Instant Coffee isn't just about convenience; it’s about honoring the resilience of the millions who came before us. We’ve taken that 1917 spirit and refined it for the modern mission. Whether you're in the backcountry or the boardroom, we make sure you have the fuel to stay alert and stay ready.
Don’t just drink coffee. Fuel the mission.
